FIELD GUIDE / FIRST SESSION

From clone to
conversation.

Veasel Code is under active development and currently runs from source. This guide starts the local V server and connects the terminal client to a provider you choose.

What you need

  • The V compiler revision recorded in the repository’s .v-version.
  • SQLite development headers and library for the V SQLite module.
  • Bun 1.3.14 or newer to build and run the OpenTUI client.
  • An API key for OpenAI-compatible, Anthropic, or Gemini models.

The backend itself is V and does not need Bun. V builds the OpenTUI terminal client on first use.

Start the V server

git clone https://github.com/veasel-labs/veasel
cd veasel
export VEASEL_MODEL_PROVIDER=anthropic
export VEASEL_MODEL=your-model-name
export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=your-api-key
v run . serve

The server listens on 127.0.0.1:4097. Keep your key in the server environment. Veasel does not send it to the terminal client or return it from the API.

Open a session

# In another terminal, from the repository
v run . tui

Create a session by selecting an existing workspace directory. Ask a question and the configured provider will answer. Messages and session events are persisted locally in SQLite.
